Digital transformation of healthcare assessments for the NHS Trusts
A web-based application to deliver evidence-based interventions that build stronger children

The requirement
The NHS trusts in the United Kingdom needed a software platform to help healthcare professionals and school nursing teams work more efficiently when it came to assessing the health of young people, children and their families.
While healthcare assessments were taking place to varying degrees across the UK, they were primarily undertaken via time-consuming paper-based systems, as opposed to efficient and trackable web-based services. A more consistent, secure and intuitive approach was therefore required.
The project at-a-glance
- Healthcare assessment software
- Iterative and user-centred design process
- Evidences need for pupil support
- Drives efficiencies, effectiveness and health improvements
- IDS service delivery includes ongoing daily technical monitoring and helpdesk
- Monthly security checks, plus regular penetration and load testing provided
- Tech stack: NET core 2.1, ASP.NET MVC, JQuery, Docker
Our solution
Through close collaboration with Nursing Consultant Kath Lancaster and her step-by-step change management solution ‘The Lancaster Model’, IDS was able to develop a highly secured healthcare assessment Software as a Service (SaaS) solution for health specialists and schools alike.
Designed to drive service improvements, this digital transformation project has provided a validated, systematic approach, the portal enables remote assessments and proactive interventions. Complex algorithms analyse individual data to identify support needs and trigger immediate alerts to appropriate team members, ensuring timely assistance.
The result is the ability to identify young people who may otherwise be ‘under the radar’ and provide help at the earliest possible stage.

The results
The secure SaaS solution streamlines the assessment process, generates real-time alerts, and provides powerful reporting tools.
Key features include indexing, search, filtering, and data sharing capabilities. The platform’s robust security measures ensure compliance with NHS guidelines and protect sensitive data – a powerful reporting suite provides access to aggregated data at school, cluster and regional level, to evidence the impact of public health interventions.
Automating tasks and providing actionable insights empowers healthcare professionals to deliver more effective and efficient services. Cyclical information can also be shared at a higher level, influencing joint strategic needs assessments, service specifications and the planning and commissioning of health, wellbeing and social care services within a local authority area.
The platform has been built with multi-tenant architecture, with a data-isolated encrypted space for each foundation, an admin suite for each NHS region and NHS trust, plus robust digital asset sharing via integrations and APIs with relevant third party support organisations, such as National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP).
Our CISSP certified cyber security specialists have ensured it adheres with NHS guidelines and cryptography regulations. By implementing robust security measures at both the application and database levels, we ensure that all behaviour and data is monitored, tracked, and encrypted.
We are so excited to be the ‘pioneers’ for rolling out this new approach to the way we collect and use information to support children’s development – from reception right through to their teenage years. For the first time, we can really identify the needs of individual schools and understand the issues facing them and their students. This new web-based app is not just an evolution but a revolution, giving us the ability to tailor our services – either independently or alongside other agencies – and reach out swiftly to those who need us most.
